A Gun Club has been formed at Ngaturi. • A meeting of the Mangatainoka Athletic Society will be held at Mangatainoka on Saturday evening next The contractors for digging up the Borough Square were very foitunate in having fine weather to finish the contract, Already a marked difference iu noticeable in the look of the Square, and when sown and flower plots arranged, it should pr)ve a great ornamentation to the town. The Secretary of the School Committee received word to-day, from Mr Davies, Agricultural Inspector to the Education Board that he would visit Pahiatua on Monday to inspect the school grounds in connection with beautifying them. Warm drenching rain fell last evening, and has continued all day to-day. The Maneahao river is raported to be in very high flood, and it is feared will damage property in the vicinity of the Marima bridge. The name of Mr Harry Hall, of Masterton, appears on the programme for the monster -Scotch concert that is being arranged in Woodviile in aid of St. David's Church. ists from Palmerston North and Dannevirke and four pipers are a Iso to render items. Owing to the inclement weather today there were no golf matches played. The Pahiatua Debating Society's "wind-up" social held in the Olympic Theatre last evening was a very enjoyable function, between 80 and 100 peopb being present. The first part ot the programme | took the form of a concert, and ow- ] ing to a lengthy programme no en- j cores were allowed. Songs , were i nicely rendered by the Misses Rob' ins, Richardson and Sayers, and i Messrs McAdam, T. Manifold and P. Milne, the last two gentlemen also being heard to advantage in the duet "Excelsior." Recitations were given by Messrs Hawkins and Burnd. The accompaniments for the singers were played by Mrs Manifold and Miss Cox. The second part of the programme was a mock banquet, and after all present did justice to a ■dainty repast the following toast list was honoured:—"The King," "Pahiatua Debating Society," proposed by Mr Manifold, responded to by Mr Dobbie; "Debating Society Officers, Mr W. Taylor—Mr Dallaston; "The Visitors," Mr Evans— Mc Godso; "The Ladies," Mr •Earnes—Mr McAdam. A pleasant surprise was sprung on the Secretary, Misa Stormont when Mr Hawkins, on behalf of the Society presented her with a silver-mounted yikstand and a handsomely-bound volume of Longfellow's Poems. In a neat speech Mr Hawkins referred in eulogistic terms of the splendid manner in which Miss Stormont had carried out her duties as Secretary. A word of praise as also given to the energetic President, Mr A. H. Dallas- . ton. The hall was then cleared for dancing, which was kept merrily going until about two o'clock. Music for the dnacing was played by Mrs •Eastwood, Mrs Donald.. Miss Mack and Mr C. Mills, and Mr. Smith acted as M.C. The supper arrangements were in the hands of, the. lady members of the Society. the daily milk supply at the Mangatainoka Cheese Factory is over. . ■ 1,000 gallons, which is more than double the quantity supplied at this ; time last year. A new whey tank has been erected, and a new vat and press have been ordered..^and will be put in early in October. The first shipment Of cheese, amounting to 103 cases (about 7 i tons), will be shipped by the,"Arawa." Forty-five suppliers are at present delivering milk to the factory and there are several yet who have not started to deliver their milk. by Telegraph. Sunday, Very heavy rain must have fallen on the hills on Friday night and on Saturday, as the Mangatainoka and Mangahao Rivers were higher than they have been for a considerable . time. The flats at Konini, Nikau, and Marima were submerged, a nd part of the approach to the bridge, between Konini and the Konini railwav station, was washed away The flood is now subsiding. The Fire Brigade was called out this afternoan to a fire in the smoke-
room on the premises ot Messrs Barren and Early, butchers. Practically no damage was done.
