In the House of Commons the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Lloyd-George, replying to Mr P. W. Verney, liberal member for Buckingham, stated that the cost ot oldage pensions between Ist January and 2nd September was as follows: England and Wales 3,270,00 0 Ireland 1,541,000 Scotland 593,000 The number of pensioners in the three kingdoms was:— England and Wales 4i0,000 Ireland 184,000 Scotland 73,000 Thus the number of pensioners proportionately to population was 11 per thousand in England and Wales, 42 per thousand in Ireland, and 15 per thousand in Scotland.
