PAHIATUA NEWS.

(From Our Resident Reporter). Friday. The annual conference of Nolicense workers in the Manawatu district is to be held on Wednesday next, 22nd inst., at Foxton. Mr W. H. Hawkins, of this town, has been selected as the speaker to address the public meeting in the evening. Hearing that Mr Thos. Horton, the weil-known nurseryman, contemplated visiting Japan after his return from 'the Fruitgrowers' Conference in Perth, W.A., I enquired of Mr Horton as to his mission in Japan. Mr Horton stated that he wished to make a thorough investigation of the trees, shrubs, and bulbs that would be most likely to suit the Mew Zealand climate, and, also, benefit this countiv. The ordinary meeting of Lodge Pahiatua, U.A.0.D., was held last evening, Bro. Swiggs, A.D., presiding. One new member was initiated into the Order and Bros. Trezise and Swiggs were appointed to meet the two delegates from the Foresters' Lodge and confer on the matter of the proposed recreation ground at the back of the Foresters' Hall. The secretary was instructed to forward to Bro. Trezise a letter of condolence in his recent sad bereavement. Bro. Courtenay, of Stonehenge Lodge, Masterton, attended the meeting. MrG. deS Baylis, Superintendent of Agricultural Experiments, paid a -visit to Pahiatua yesterday, and in company with the secretary of the local branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union inspected ttie land where the experiments with grasses, ■root crops and manures are to be carried out.. Mr Baylis was very favuurably impressed with the land at Konini, and Mangahao, and considered the hil's at Mangaramarama admirably suited for experimenting with manures for the pastures. Mr Baylis' visit there has given considerable impetus to manuring ex ■ periments. I understand that Mr C. Avery, of Konini, is putting 50 acres in crop this year, the seeds to be sown consisting of horse beans, grass and rape mixed and turnips. The Pahiatua Co-operative store ia to be floated with a capital of ~£15,000, not £1,500 as I mentioned in this morning's issue. A meeting of th* Ladies' Committee of the Pahiatua-Akitio A. and P. Association is to be held to-morrow (Saturday) evening, to arrange the programme for needlework, cookery and children's classes. The membership of the Society is going up by leaps and bounds, no less than 13 new members being elected last Tuesday evening, and the secretary is to be complimented on his vigorous efforts. The Huia Ladies' Hockey Club are holding a social at an early date.
