DEATH DUTIES CARRIED.

Clause 40 of the Finance Bill, enacting the increased death duties, was strenuously opposed in committee in the House of Commons, but was earned after the closure had bean applied, by 192 votes to 95. Mr Balfour (Leader of the Opposition) emphasised the danger of taxing capital to meet the country's annual expenditure, The Government spokesmen main • tained that the proposals were fair and just, and not unreasonable in comparison with the resources of the country.
TRADES BOARDS BILL,
Received September 15, 8.30 a.m. LONDON, September 14. The Trade Board Bill has passed through Committee in the House of Lords. The Government promised to consider suggestions by Lords Salisbury and Milner to safeguard an employer's secret process, and also for representation on the Board of Home Workers in the case of trades in which a considerable proportion of home workers are engaged.
