ANOTHER NTAARCTIC EXPEDITION.

The success of the Americans in the field of Arctic research has given great impetus to the American idea of flying the stars and stripes at both Poles. There is renewed talk of equipping another Antarctic expedition.

THE SCOTT EXPEDITION

Received September 13, 11.15 p.m. LONDON September. 13. Lieut. Shackleton will give the benefit of his recent experience to the preparation of' Scott's expedition, the cost of which is estimated at £40,000. Scott hopes to start in August, 1910, and intends with a view to investigating virgin areas to establish on King Edward Seventh Land a second base 400 miles eastward of McMurd Sound. He will take Manchurian ponies to carry food to the foot of the glaciers. Their place will then be taken by Eskimo dogs, and then utilising improved motor sledges, which have been satisfactorily tested in Norway.

COMMANDER PEARY'S EXPEDITION.

Received September 13, 11.15 p.m. LONDON, September 13.

Commander Peary states that he went ten miles beyond the camp at the North Pole and eight miles to the right of the camp taking photographs, depositing records and studying the horizon with a telescope for possible land. Commander Peary iniorms the State Department that he took possession of the entire region on behalf of the President of the United States.
