Messrs King and Son, the successful tenderers for Messrs Abraham and Williams' new brick building in Queen Street, will make a start with the contract this morning. Mr H. H. Seed, the District Chief Superintendent of St. John Ambul ance Brigade, will visit Masterton «n Monday nexc tor the purpose of inspecting the Nursing Division and the Ambulance Corps, when it is essential that every member should attend. The Ruamahanga River has done, considerable damage between the - junction of the Taueru and Waingawa rivers, and the farmers in the vicinity whose properties have been affected are considering the question of erecting a number of large groynes to protect their land. Mr J. C. Cooper and other members of th<* Directorate of the Wellington Farmers' Freezing Company left yesterday morning to inspect the various sites which have been offered to the Company for the purjpoaes of erecting the treezing worts on. the Pigeun Bush, Woodside an! Waingawa sites will be inspected in that order, after whhh the sites in Wellington will be visited. A bitter cry from English village mothers is to be expressed, the Road Onion hopes, in an extensively signed petition to the Queen. "We women «f England humbly beseech your Majesty to help us to get relief from the motor cars. We are sure yaur Majesty cannot know how much we suffer from them. They have made our lives a misery. Our childrec ire always in danger, our things are ruined by the dust; we cannot open our windows, our rest is spoilt by the noise all night. If thejj could be made to go slow through the villages it would mean a great thing; but we are only poor people, and the great majority of those who use motor cars take no account of us." In payinga tribute to "one of the grandest men who ever SRt in Parliament of this country," Mr F. F. Hockly, Opposition candidate for the Rangitikei seat, spoke as follows, at Eaatown, Wanganui, last week, in regard to Mr Massey:—"Honest and straight in nis convictions, sane, sensible and broad-minded, clean and above board in his tactics, a born fighter, tireless and indefatigable, with only one aim and object in view—the betterment of the conditions of life for all sections of the people. The country to day realises his worth, realises the great work he has dore in Parliament, sees tnat he is on right lines in the reforms that he advocates so strenuously The country is on the point of giving him a mandate to take the reins of government, and I shall be proud to be at his back, proud to help him in carrying out those great reforms that are so pressing, and so essential, not only to the progress and prosperity, but the very salvation, of the Dominion."
