THE FARMERS' MEAT WORKS.

ENGINEER'S ON WAIRARAPA SITES.

The sites under offer in the Wairarapa for the proposed freezing works have been reported upon by the Engineer as follows: WAINGAWA. This, th« first site visited, I consider suitable provided that the sole right of taking water from the race on the proparty is obtained. The spring inspected will also be a valuable asset, the water here being of a particularly good quality and ot considerable volume. These spings, however mu3t not b8 depended upon, and I strongly advise getting your water-supply from the rivers, being permanent and reliable. In regard to drainage I should advise that, if possible, the right be acquired to drain on the river beds, but failing this, it will be necessary to acquire a considerable area of the shingle flats surrounding the site and instal a percolation system, for which the land is particularly well adapted. I would recommend that for this purpose at least 200 acres be acquired. WOODSIDE. This site has one advantage which is not possessed by that at Waingawa, that is, accessibility to the banks of the rivre, and therefore sole control of the water obtained therefrom. This will, however, entail the, construction of a siding of some length, as the railway is at present some distance from the river and about 30ft above it, The cost of such a siding will be considerable, although not so great as Jto debar this site form consideration should it be suitable as a depot central to your fat stock districts. The land here for drainage is not quite equal to Waingawa, but still good enough for this purpose, being of a shingly formation throughout.

PIGEON BUSH,

The water supply for this site, in the absence of any data to the contrary, does not appear to me to be depended upon, and as I should propose draining into the Wairarapa Lake the supply from this source could not be use 3. I understand, that the aajacent creek might furnish a supply ample for all requirements, but the cost of such a scheme will be great. Unless there are strong leasons pointing to this site as a depot for fat stock, I think the cost will debar its inclusion among the sites suitable for your purpose.

I may state that from a constructional point of view the sites in the Wairarapa are very much superior to any inspected by me near Wellington.
