MASTERTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

The monthly meeting of the Masterton School Committee was hell last evening. There weie present— Messrs R. Brown (chairman), H. J. O'Leary, A. Chapman, J. Carpenter, 'I. J. Thompson, A. Hendry and G. A. P. Townsend. An apology for absence was received from Messrs E. H. Waddington and C. Perry. Mr A. Snowball wrote stating that "Life-saving Classes" were being formed in Masterton, and suggesting that similar classes be formed at the school. It was decided that the matter be left in the hands of the visiting committee to confer with the Headmaster, and report at the next meeting.

In connection with the proposed Miniature Rifle Range for the school, the Educationl Board wrote in reference to the Masterton application, and asked if a place could not be selected for the Rifle Range where the expenditure necessary would be considerably less. They also asked what other schools had been invited to make use of the Rifle Range if erected, and what each would contribute. A communication was also received from Major iVicDonald, stating that he was of the opinion that the range could be erected for £3O. despite the other estimates of £SO submitted to the Committee If the committee thought it desirable they could have a tube range instead at a cheap price The writer felt sure that the Department would not subsidise the range to the extent of £25. The matter was fully discussed, and it. was decided that the Range Committee, Messrs A. Chapman, jT. J. Thompson and C. Perry, go into the question and submit ro- | commendations to the committee at i the next meeting. The secretary of the State School Bible Teachers' Association at Nelson forwarded particulars of the Nelson system of Bible teaching in schools It was decided to write to Mr S. Pearson, who was interesting himself in the matter of instituting the system in Masterton, and was responsible for the correspondence received, stating that the committee were not prepared to move in the matter until it was brought formally before them by the local clergymen or others interested. Messrs K. Brown, J. Carpenter, arid A. Chapman were appointed the visiting members for the month. The chairman, in referring to the Inspectors' report on the Side School, stated that it was a most satisfactory one. Reference had been made by him to the satisfactory work of Miss Yorke, the mistress and staff, the kindly discipline prevailing and he excellent care taken of the children.
