The Hon. G. Fowlds received many congratulations on celebrating this silver wedding at Auckland on Tuesday last. Mr Whatman, of Masterton, who has acted as referee for the Hastings Boxing association during the past few months, has resigned that position. Mr and Mrs R. Barclay, of Masterton, have decided to take a short holiday to Australia. They will leave Wellington for Sydney by the Moeraki Mr and Mrs J. F. Smith, of Dalefield, will leave there this morning for the Nelson district, where they will take up their residence, writes our Carterton correspondent. Mr J. J. Virgo, general secretary of the Y.M.C.A., Sydney, and national secretary for Australasia, arrived at Auckland on Sunday by the Victoria. He is he guest of the Hon. G. Fowlds during his stay in the Northern city. Drs A. H. Gilmer, H. Pollen, and D. McGavin of Wellington, Dr Wilson, of Palmerston, and Dr Hosking, of Masterton, have been appoited medical referees under the Workers' Compensation for Accidents Act.

The Rev. E. O. Blamires ana A. B. Chappell are to be recommended to the forthcoming Methodist Conference as New Zealand's delegates to the World's Convention of Methodist Sunday School workers, to be held in Washington, U.S.A., in July next.

His Excellency the Governor, Lord Plunket, will pay an official Masonic visit to the Nelson district in the capacity of Grand Master, about the beginning of November.

This will be his first official > visit to the Nelson district during his Excellency's term of office. Mr J. T. Lang, will represent the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce at the Conference of Chambers to be held" in the chief cities of the Commonwealth (Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane) shorth. He will leave Palmerscon North to-day and catch Friday's Sydney boat.

Mr G. H. Lloyd, Government Land Valuer, who Was locate! in Woodville for some years past, but who waa retrenched some months ago, is being kept on by the Department (states the "Examiner"). Mr Lioyd has been appointed to the Taranaki district, with his headquarters at Hawera.

Mr H. J. Mynott was presented on Thursday evening by the members of the Tukapa Football Club, New Plymouth, with a handsome gold watch. Mr Mynott, has been playing for the Tukapa seniors for 14 years. For the past ten years he has continuously represented Taranaki, has represented New Zealand in the splendidly successful ''All Black" team, and has played for the Domjnign jn its inter-colonial matohea since, | Mr W.' Macdonald, M.P. for the ] Bay of Plenty, will be entertained at a social at Rotorua next Tuesdav by his constituents of all parties. A peculiar feature about the affair is that it is being promoted and managed by a small committee, appointed equally from Mr MBcdonald's election committee and from the committee that acted on behalf of Mr liow, his opponent at the election. This is a token of the respect in which Mr Macdonald is held by his opponents as well as his suppor • ters.

Ernest Smith, aged 31, who died at the WaiKato Hospital on Saturday from peritonitis supervening on an operation for appendicitis, went to the war in South Africa in the same boat as the Second Contingent and joined Brabant's horse. On his discharge he returned to New Zealand, but left again as sergeant of the Sixth Contingent. He was present at the siege of Wepener, the capture of Prinsiloo and other engagements. Subsequently he was chosen to attend the Coronation festivities. Since his return to New Zealand he had been in farming pursuits in the Cambridge dis trict. He leaves a wife and child.
