Lieuten&nt-Colonsl John P. Watt, V.D., who has tor so long commanded the Wanganui Rifle Battalion, has resigned his command. Colonel Watt began his volunteer career in the Wanganui Rifls, rising to the command of that company, and was promoted to field rank twenty-three years ago, but, later, resumed the command of his old company. Some ten years ago he wag given the command of the local battalion, which command he has retained ever since, and during that time has rendered much valuable service to the volunteer movement. He was to take farewell of his command at the battalion parade last night. His successor in command of the battalion will be Maior Hughes. At the annual meeting of the Opaki Rifle Club, last evening, the Captain W. J. Welch, referred to the loss the Club had sustained through the departure of Rifleman W. J. Henry from the district. He vi as not only a marksman of exceptional ability, but ever sirce he had been a member he had always displayed the keenest interest in the welfare of the Club. Several other members spoke in similar terms, and it was unanimously decided to forward Rifleman Henry a suitable present as a token of appreciation of his valuable services during his long connection with the club.
