Twenty British and nine Canadian delegates to the Chambers of Commerce Congress about to be held in Brisbane, arrived here by the Ma rama from Vancouver. In the course of an interview, one of the British delegates dealt with the importance of the Congress in the direction of fostering and federating the trade of the Empire. He recognised that preferential trade within the Empire would be the principal topic of discussion. Personally, the delegate said, hejstrongly believed that a scheme could be devised which would prove beneficial both to the Mother and to the colonies. The visitors expressed high appreciation of the offers of assistance made by New Zealand and A ustralia in the matter of defence of the Empire.

CANADA'S COMMERCIAL TREATIES.

Received September 6, 10.45 a.m. BRISBANE, September 6. Mr Ames, a member of the Canadian Parliament, said the chiet question to be dealt with at the congress was Imperial preference. Canada had gone as far as passible in that direction with the United Kingdom, but it was possible to go further with Australia, to the advantage of both countries. The treaty with New Zealand, Mr Ames declared, was working wellCanada's trade with that country had doubled in five years. Arrangements between Canada and other countries had also resulted in benefit to all concerned.
