Bowden, Vicar of Riccarton, aged 4S, afr.er a short illness. Mrs Hisiop. wife of the Hon. T. W. Hislop, latff Mayor of Wellington, died yesterday morr.ing after a long illness. Mr J. H. G. Burnside, of the Napier office «.f the Government Labour Department, has been transferred to Wellington.

Mr Snenr-er Gollan. the well-known Hawke's Bay snortsman.who is now resident in England, has had a sad bereavement lately in the death of his eldest son, a promising boy of 13. Mr Justice Cooper arrived from Wellington by the mail train on Saturday to preside at the sittings of the Supreme Court, which will open in Napier to-day. The Hon. G. Fowlds says the Premier is expected to arrive in Auck • land on September 30th. Parliament will be opened within a few days of Sir Joseph Ward's arrival in Wellington.

Mr J. Charles, a well-known vocal ist, of Wellington, was married at Wellington yesterday, to Miss A. Murray, of Wellington Mr O. Howard was best man and. Miss L. Murray was bridesmaid. Mr A. McFarlane, of Pahiatua, has baen elected president of the National Dairy Association, Ltd., in succession to Mr J. T. Foreman, who has had to retire owing to illhealth.

Mr S. C. Fache, of Wellington, who has been in Burmah for the past seven years, arrived by the Aparima at Auckland on Thursday, on a visit to his native land. He came on to Wellington by the Main Trunk train on Saturday night. g* "*-.*&*

Mr" Samuel Hill, for many years Government Valuer for Northern Taranaki, is being retired under the Government's retrenchment scheme. His duties will be taken over by Mr Lloyd, who, it is understood, will be stationed at Hawera.

The death of Mr John Greenwood, dentist, and an old resident, occurred at Nelson on Sunday ni rht. The late Mr Greenwood, who was 77 years of age, came to New Zealand in 1847, and had practised in various places in the Dominion.

Mr E. C. Wood, manager of the Whakaronga Dairy Factory, who had been appointed an instructor on the Dairy Commissioner's staff learnt his business at the Waikouaiti factory, one ot the most consistent prize-winning factories in the Dominion. He was manager of this company when he came to Whakaronga. Dr Tudor Jones has resigned his pastorate of the Unitarian Free Church, Wellington, having completed the term for which he came out, and will take his departure from Wellington in February next. He expects to return within two years from the Continent and establish branches of the church in nrher centres. A student from Oxford will probably take charge in Wellington. A New Zealand girl, Miss Dorothy G. Davidson, is among the prizewinners at the Watson's Ladies' College in Edinburgh. MK* Davidson gained the gold medal presented by the boys of George Watson's College for the best paper on English; a prize presented for a special essay and a medal presented by the Sir Walter Scott Club for best essay. Miss Anna P. Davidson, of New Zealand, won a bursary of £IOO for educational advancement, but resigned it. ' A well-known postal official. Mr Alfred George Jackson, died at Christchurch last week. Deceased, who was known as Fred Jackson, joined the post office in Wondville over twenty years ago, and he was a very smart official. Deceased, along with John Hall (the then manager of the Woodville cheese factory), W. Kilner and James Lawrence, were the originators ot the Woodville Football Club. Mrs Chas. Baddeky (Dannevirke) and Mrs Percv Holder are sisters.of deceased, and Mr J. Carter, a member of the staff of the Palmerston North Post Office, is a brother in-law. The death occurred on Sun-iay last of Mr Roy Pirani, youngest son of Mr Fred. Pirani, of Feilding. The sad event occurred at the residence of hij uncle, Mr D. Piiani of Mauku near Auckland where the young man had gone for health reasons. The pulmonary complaint from which he was suffering had however made too great inroads into his constitution and the change was made in vain. The deceased was only 21 and was a native of Palmerston North, spending his early years and attending school there. Later he lived in Wellington and subsequently was a mem • ber of the mechanical staff of the Feilding "Star." A very old resident of Taradale passed away on Friday night last, in the person of Mrs Ellen Lord, wife of Mr William Lord. Mrs Lord arrived in Canterbury some 43 years ago, and after residing there for six years, came to Hawke's Bay, where she had resided ever since. Her death was somewhat sudden, the immediate cause being heart failure. The deceased, who was much respected by a large circle of friends, leaves a grown-up family of six sons and three daughters to mourn their loss. Word was received in Masterton last evening of the death at Auckland of Mr George Hindmarsh, a son-in-law of Mr W. Cullen. of Masterton, and brother to Mr A. H. Hindmarsh, solicitor, of Wellington. The deceased was a runholder in the Gisborne district up to about a year ago, when he settled down in Auckland city. The ,late Mr Hindmarah took a rather prominent part in political life, and last election intended to contest the Bay of Plenty seat but for his leaving the district.
