THE DOMINIONS AND INDEPENDENCE.
LORD BERESFORDS* VIEWS
Received September 5, 5,15 p.m. LONDON, September 5. Lord Charles Beresford, speaking at the National Club, Toronto, said if the Imperial Government interfered with the Dominions in any way in the control and the administration of defence it would place the Dominions in a subordinate position, in which they ought not to be. "It is thought," said the speaker, "that there may be-some danger of the Dominions declaring themselves independent. Well, if they did, who is going to oppose them,. You don't suppose the Old Country would do it. It would be regrettable if the Dominions declared for independence, yet they have a perfect right to do so." He, however, did not believe that there was any shadow of a chance of their doing so.
