BARDSLEY AND TKUMPER SCORE WELL.
United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph CopyrightLONDON, September 3. The cricket match between the Australians and Essex was resumed a Ley ton to-day. The county in its first innings made 268 runs, and - when stumps were drawn overnight the Australians had lost one wicket for eight runs. Bardsley accompanied Carter to tne wickets. Carter carried his overnight score to 32, chiefly by late cutting; then (jibson, standing back from the wicker, caught Jiim. Two for 46.
Trumper followed. Both batsmen were steady. The 50 was hoisted in 40 minutes, and the century in 75 minutes. At the luncheon adjournment. the total was 173—-Bards-ley 55, Trumper 71. On resuming, Trumper immediately gave an easy chance to Carpenter in the slips, which was taken advantage of. The retiring batsman, who superb driving and leg glancing, was 95> minutes at the wickets, and hit eight fourers. Three for 175. Bardsley stayed till 205, and was then caught low down at second slip* He played a patient innings of 65 minutes, and escaped an easy chance of being run out at 46. Gregory succumbed to the first ball he received, Gibson making a fine catch standing well back from the wickets. With the acore unaltered Macartney lost his wicket playing forward to Young. Six for 218. Ransford was unsteady at the start, but livened up afterwards. He hit up 40 in good style. Hopkins 22 and Macaliater (who carried out his bat) also scored well. The seventh wicket fell for 228, and the eighth for 262, The innings lasted for 240 minutes, and closed for 278 runs. Scores:— AUSTRALIANS. First Innings. The Essex team went in for the second time, and scored 26 runs for one wicket, Fane being bowled by O'Connor without scoring Cotter bawled four no balls in the first two overs. Stumps were drawn before 6 o'clock owing to duskiness.
