The locally owned horse Tyrannic was successful in winning the Hunters' Hurdles at Marton to-day. The Ballance Methodist Church anniversary tea meeting and social was not held last evening owing to the inclement weather, but is being held this evening. There was a change this morning from the mild weather experienced here for the past week, cold southerly weather setting in, which will not be relished by either the dairy or sheep farmer. The tender of a Dannevirke build er has been accepted for the erection of the Presbyterian Church in Woodville, and the price I understand is close on £I,OOO. A monster .Scotch concert in aid of the building fund is being arranged to take place about the end of the present month. Although the weather last evening was anything but favourable for socials, yet the Catholic social in the Hamua Hall was a decided success, and there were between 70 and 80 couples present. A splendid programme of vocal and musical items was rendered, and a pleasant evening was spent by all present. The gathering was a representative one, including several residents from Pahiatua. The committee of which Mrs B. J. Quirk was an energetic feecretary, are to be congratulated on their efforts, and the funds of the church will be considerably augmented. The Programme Committee of the Pabiatua-Akitio A. and P. Society will meet on Saturday evening, to arrange a programme and matters in connection with the Horticultural and Industrial exhibits, which I understand will be shown in the Drill Hall.
A fancy dress skating carnival is to be held in the Drill Hall in about a fortnight's time. Prizes are to be given for the most graceful lady and gentleman skater. A match between the Pahiatua and Masterton Golf Clubs is to take place on the local links on Saturday. A burning flue in the northern end of the Birough, caused a little ecxitement in town this afternoon.
