AN INCORRECT STATEMENT.
In an article published in its issue of yesterday our evening contemporary states, in reference to the proposal that the Mayor of Masterton should call a public meeting on the
question of the Waiugawa site for the Farmers' Meat Works, "a small ommittee is working quietly and tactfully in Masterton to do what can be done tor the local site. Ihis committee, we understand, does not desire a municipal meeting, The question is a very delicato one to handle, and a public demonstration might do more harm than good." The "small committee" to which our contemparory refers, is no doubt those gentlemen who have interested themselves in the matter already and have succeeded in placing a number of shares. Its statement ; that they do not desire a public meeting is absolutely incorrect. So far from not desiring anything uf the kind we have their authority for Baying that they are prepared to a petition to the Mayor requesting him to call a meeting as suggested. Our local contemporary may deiire "to throw cold water" on the proposition, and if so, it should do so openly. It is very improper indeed to publish a statement on the "we understand" tactic, when it could and should make absolutely certain of the accuracy of its belief before publishing it.
