The Deportment of industries and Commerce ha;s receiver] tho following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, 28th Auorust, 1909: — The mutton market is very q liet — Canterbury 2gd lb, North Island 2jjd lb. Light weights are getting very scarce. The lamb market is wck. There is an inclination to forcv sales, and low prices are incresiKirg the output. Average price for Canterbury lamb 3&d lb, and average price North Island 2&d lb. The beef market is steady, with a good demand. New Zealand hinds are quoted at 3gd lb, and fores at 2£d lb. The butter market is quiet, but firm. Danish is'quoteri at 117s per cwt, and Siberian at 102s per cwt. The cheese market is quiet, with a tendency in favour of buyers. New Zealand is quoted at 595. The hemp market is firm, but no Business is dull, and New Zealand offerings are very small. New Zealand pood fair grade, on spot, per ton, £25 15s; New Zealand fair grade on spot per ton £24 15s. ! Fair current Manila on spot, per j ton, £25 10s. September-December ' shipments New Zealand good fair.pei ! ton £25 10s; New Zeaand, fair 'grade, per ton, £24 10s; fair current Manila per ton, £24 15s. Manila output 30,000 bales. The cocksfoot seed market is steady, but the demand is only moderate. Bright clean New Zealand is quoted at 665. The hop market is firm, and prices continue to The English crop is small, and of poor quality. Market prospects are favourable. English is quoted at 90s, and American at 100s.
The wheat market is weaker, and there is a tendency downwards, on account of English crop having been slightly damaged. Offering: New Zealand long-berried wheat on spot, ex granary, per quarter of 4961b, 41s. The oat market is quiet, with a tendency in favour of bu-yers. New Zealand Sparrowbiil oats, ex granary, on spot,, per quarter of 3841b5, 25s 6d; New Zealand oats, Danish, ex granary, on spot, per quarter of 3201b, 21s, Beans. — Market quiet, owing t) reduced supplies. New Zealand beans, f.a.q. (new cropper 5041b), 36s 6d. Peas—Market firm, with an improved demand New Zealand peas, Partridge, per 5041b, 465. The wool market remains quiet.
