MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

MEETING OF WORKS COMMITTEE. At a meeting of the Borough Works and Finance Committee, held on Tuesday, August 24th, there were present:-The Mayor (in the chair), Crs Hoar, Morris, Pragnell, Prentice, Rigg, Temple. Aecounts totalling .£904 19s 7ri, as set out in "Orders on Treasurer" book, were submitted and passed for payment. A communication was received from Mr Hugh Wilson, of the Cai--terton Bacon Company, asking lor the installation of a si.igeing machine at the Abattoir.—The application was considered together with a report from the Abattoir Manager upon the subject, upon which the Committee recommend that no action De takan. A communication was submitted from the Trust Lands Trust asking the Borough to extend its Lincoln road sewer into and along the private right-of-wav between Mr Bulpit's premises and the rear of the ! Star block, the Tiust to bear all expense of and incidental to the execution or the work.—The communication was considered together with a verbal reDort of the Borough Engineer upon which the Committee recommend that the request be granted. GAS COMMITTEE. At a meeting of the Gas, Park and Library Committee, held on Friday, August 27th, there wore present: —Crs Elliott (in the chair), Ewington, Hoar, Pragrell, Temple. A report of the Manager of tha Gasworks, dated the 27th inst., was submitted. Arising thereout the Committee recommend that the building of a retort bench and chimney be effected fay day labour; that a Wanganui I spiral steel pip?, 14in diamater, I thereabouts 150 feet, be purchased and fitted ap a foul main; that for the present the balance of the £12,000 loan, viz., £3,000 be not lifted; that the plant and other matters required to bring the works up to the capaciy of fifty million cubic f?et per annum originally contemplated, be at onre carried out upon a.i estimate of £2,500, and that the cost thereoi for the present be debited to the Gasworks revenue; that the street lamps be erected, maintained and lit, one in Dixcn street at a point near the intersection of Princess street, and one in Queen street at the intersection of Renall street; that on the application ef the Headmaster of the Masterton School the Committee recommended that he be given a rebate of 2d on each gallon of tar sold to him for the purpose of the district school at 6d per gallon. . , It was recommended that the wages of the office youth (S. Temple) be 25s per week in lieu of 20s per week, to operate from the 2Gth inst. , The Committee having considered the application of the Congregational Church, issued directions for a street . lamp to be provided, maintained and ■ lit. at the Queen street intersection with Remll street. The Committee considered the communication from the Cemetery ; Trustees upon the subject of over- j hanging trees in the Park, and recommsnd subject to the Trustees extending their boundary fence so as to connect up with the return fence on the Lake side of the Trustees' grounds, that the four trees complained of be removed.
