THAT NEW MEAT COMPANY.
To the Editor. Sir,- I do not wish to waste your space replying at length to critics of my modest contribution to the interesting correspondence that is now appearing in your columns. I will first of all deal with "Shareholder" who accuses me of holding opinions favourable to interests which he imagines I possess. lam not a shareholder in any meat company, neither have I any interest whatever in the Waingwwa site. In my dealings with the meat companies at Wellington I have always been well treated; that is, in my opinion, fairly treated, and I would also remind "shareholder" that the freezing companies are always prepared to freeze on clients' account, and tnat any sheepfarmer who wishes can take the chances of the Home irarket. I am afraid "Shareholder" is not a farmer, for one sentenc? in his lettei impresses me in a most humorous manner. He says:—"And there ia no reason why freezing t works should be established inland as } well aa dairy factories." I suppose he means that there is not any reason why freezing works should not be established inland, because dairy factories are. Surely a most negative and pointless way of reasoning? j If "Shareholder" cannot bring for- ; ward any better reason for establish- ; ing inland works than the fact that | there are cheese factories in the ; Wairarapa he should, after apologis- ' ing to his readers at his own ex- ; pense, gracefully retire from the j controversy. Imagine a really up- j to-date cheese factory in Lambton J Quay. i. I have now to deal with "Another Farmer" who blames me for not signing my name to my letter while | he (quite unintentionally, I assume) j omits to sign his own letter with his ; usual and proper signature. There is j not anything in "Another Farmer's" i letter that calls specially for reply, j It is a little curious, however, that j "Another Farmer" seems to be more interested in the welfare of Masterton than that of the farming community. He asserts very positively:—"We want to make Masterton a town of such importance," etc. If that is so, I wonder the farmers don't meet together some day and discuss how best to make Masterton into a town of importance, and let the farms take care of themselves.—l am, etc., OPAKI FARMER. August 28th, 1909.
