CARTERTON NEWS.

(From Our Resident Reporter). Thursday. Mrs Acheson, wife of Mr R.J. Achescn, S.M., of Hokitilca, is at present on a visit to Carterton, and is the guest of Mr and Mrs J. T. M. Hornsby, of Belvedere Street. Mrs Acheson has been taking part in the golf tournament at Paltrierston North. Court Marquis of Normanby, A.O.I 1 ., met last evening, Bro. A. J. I'isher, C. U., presiding. Four members were declared oil the sick list fund, and the two new members wero initiated. The second game of the Friendly Societies' card tournament was played Jast evening, when the Oddfellows defeated the Foresters by one game. The Oddfellows have now secured two wins in the firat round, the only games played so far, and they now stand with 4 points to their credit and none against. On Saturday the Carterton thirds play Dalefield at the latter place in the third-class Rugby championship, the Carterton team being:—Rzoska, Lee, Crawley, Nix, J. Henderson, ' Bowles, 0. Cadwallader Wallis, Johnston, Masson and Henderson. Blanche Aropere, wife of the late Wiri Aropere, more familiarly known as "Billy the Maori," died at the Black Bridge pah yesterday, and Maoris are gathering there in numbers to hold a tangi over the mortal remains.
