(From Our Resident Rcpo^trft). Thursday. WEDDING. A pretty wedding was celebrated at Mangatainoka by the Rev._ Gardner this afternoon,, the,, .contracting parties being Mr Arthur John Wrkeford, youngest son of Mr H, J. Wakeford, an old resident of Mangatainoka, and Miss Mary; T> Harris, eldest daughter of Mr John Harris, of Meadowbank, Woodville, and chairman of the Woodville County Council. The bride, who was bscomiugly dressed in cream silk, trimmed with cream silk lace, and wearing the orthodox veil and orange blossoms, was attended by Miss Daisy Wakeford and Miss A'nie Harris as bridesmaid?. Thesejudies were both dressed in cream mouS3lline trimmed with cream insertion, and Mr H. T. Mexted attended as be3t mar. After the ceremony a sumptuous wedding breakfast was partaken of, and the usual toasts were honoured, including that of Miss Daisy Wakeford. the occasion being her twentyfirst birthday. The bridegroom presented the bride with a gold pendant, and gold brooches to the bridesmaids. The happy couple left for the north by the six o'clock train on a honeymoon trip, and their future home"will be at Norsewood. This evening a dance in honour of the casion and also in honour of Miss D. Wakeford's twenty-first ! v ' 'ny. is being held in the MangaU<i.- ..it a library hall. A shock oi' earthquake occured in Pahiatua and Mangatainoka this morning about 3 o'clock. Constable Belcher, of Wellington, arrived by to day's express to take Constable W. Cooper's place in Pahiatua. Prior to his leaving for Napier yesterday, Constable Cooper was presented by the members of the Pahiatua Gun Club and Mher friends with a smoker's companion. Mr George Oxley made the presentation, and those present made eulogistic reference as to Constable Cooper's many qualities. He was heartily con gratulated on the fearless manner in which he had always carried out his duties as a police officer. Mr Cooper f3elirigly responded.
The funeral of the late Mr Sam Reeves, of Konini, took place this afternoon. Mr Reeves, who died on Tuesday evening, was an old settier of Konini, he having been dairying there for a number of years. The deceased Had reached the age of 51. A well-attended meeting of settlers was held in the Makomako Schoolroom last evening, to consider the advisability of erecting a public hall at thai place. Mr McLeary occupied the chair. It was finally decided to thoroughly canvass the district and hold a further meeting on September Bth. ' The annual social of St. Peter's Church, held in the Drill Hall last evening, was a decided success and visitors were present from all the country-districts. Refreshmnets were provided by the ladies of the congregation. Messrs J, Osburn Lilly and L. T, Herbert officiated as M.'sC. The Rev. Isaacson returned thanks to all those who had rendered help during the evening. Mr Chatwin, of Mangatainoka, has been appointed referee in the Wairarapa-Bush football match on the local ground on Saturday next.
