THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY THURSDAY, AUGUST 26, 1909. A GREAT CHANCE.
It is said that fortune knocks, at least once, at the door of every man, and if this is true of men in general it may very well be applied to the communities in which thsy live. Hitherto any movement that looked like materialising into good fortune for the town of Masterton has ended in disappointment until there is some reason to fear that th? business people have become so inured to stagnation that the power to make .an effort in the direction of assisting themselves by promoting the development of the town appears to be almost absent. We trust, however, that our fear is groundless, but we cannot help remarking upon the goahead spirit dislayed by many towns, which is indeed in extreme contrast with the of Masterton. At the present time it is an actual fact that there is a probability of larije meat freezing works being erected in the near vicinity of the town, but instead of.finding that the leading business people are leaving no stone unturned to convert the probability into a certainty, what do we realise to be the position? Simply that there is either no interest taken in the matter, or that there id lack of the necessary organisation to give forcible expression to whatever interest may be taken. It is incredible to believe that the business people are completely apathetic in regard to a question that so vitally concerns their own interests, and we are of opinion that a little organisation would have a beneficial effect in the way of causing the business people of the town to be able to exercise some influence in regard to the selection of a site. The question is one in which tha member for the district might very well take an interest, but, unfortunately, he is engaged touring the country telling the people how to make money rapidly, and impressing upon them the advantages of closer settlement. Masterton, of course, does not need his services in such matters! In the absence of the member for the district the Mayor of the town might, perhaps, in a suitable manner draw the attention of the public to the importance of the question. The Waingawa site is admittedly easily the best that can be obtained in the Wairarapa, and leading expert opinion is strongly in favour of the works being situated inland. Shares ought to be freely taken up by the
Masterton business people, and we hope that a strong effort will be made to bring home to our men of commerce the advantages to be derived from securing a tangible interest in the new Meat Company.
