THE POLICE COMMISSION.

gßy Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, August 25.

At the Police Commission, Sergeant Sbeaban complained of the work of what he described as 'the handyman." While he was in charge of Newton station the Inspector received a telegram from the Commissioner asking him to report on the efficiency and organisation of the station, as he had a reason to wonder whether a change at Newton was not desirable, and would like to know whether the Inspector could make a recommendation to that effect. There was no cause for complaint whatever, and he could only conclude it was the work ot the "handy-man." Sergeant Sheahan said the inferior class of men entering the force during the last three years, were called "wasters," and were not fit for the service. Dr Sharman, the medical officer, asked if he had anything to say in reply to the complaints made, said he had information showing that certain individuals had approached a member of Parliament with a view to having Dr Sharman fired out of the force. Constable Forman said he had personally declined promotion, but a good deal of influence was connected therewith. He mentioned several case 3 in which juniors were promoted over the heads of seniors.
