SPORTING.

RACING.

TURF NOTES.

(By "Zetland.")

The Wdnrapa Hunt Club's steeplechase meeting will take place at Clareville to-morrow. The course is in splendid condition, and good fields are assured in every event. Bookmakers will be licensed to ply their calilng, and will probably be present in fair numbers. The sport. i n g public may rely on good racing being witnessed throughout the afternoon.

At Opaki yesterday morning a fair number of horses were worked, and the outside of the course proper was opened for those engaged at the Marton meeting. Half to three-quar-ter pace work was allotted, Aberration, Skye, Over Rate, Merrie England filly, San Julie, and Merriwee fily. Embrocation, and th« Sir Laddo colt, sprinted two furlongs in good style, and Lucretius held Jet de More safe over six furlongs. Pukewhai and Gaelic were associated in a gallop over furlongs. The first named cut out the running for six furlongs, when Gaelic joined issue, and the pair finished together. The San Fran—Zisca filly, Matira, and First Consul, ran six furlongs together, the latter finishing with a slight advantage. Haka and Retinue put In a mile at a strong pace. Moloch and Merrie Kose, the latter having the worst of the weights, ran a mile in good style. The mare got the best of the start, but was soon joined by Moloch, and in a good finish the latter finished in front. Both horsss were short of fast work, so will be benefited by the gallop. R. Knox has a Merrie England— Roney filly, full sister to Lucretius, ready to be put into work. She is well grown, with a particularly good fore end, and when in rasing condition should prove useful. A yearling by Sir Laddo—St. Leger mare shows plenty of style and quality, and as he will be well cared for should be well furnished as a two year old.
