RAILWAY CONTROL.

Mr Millar draws the inference that the railways of Victoria and New South Wales are profitable because the people are made to pay more for passenger and freight services tl an the people of New Zealand pay for similar services. It is much to be desired that some competent authority should prepare reliable comparative tables to settle tills question. It has baen raised before; in fact, it is the stock answer made to the criticism that the railways of New Zealand are less remunerative than those of the principal Australian States, ani that the reason must be sought in their manage ment. For our own part, says the "Southland Times," we cannot find evidence to support the Ministers explanation or inference.
