MrR. H. Turton, S.M., of Greymouth, will be located at Master ton. Mr Louis Becke, the well-known novelist, is at present touring "the North Island. -. ■.,,.. Mr A. F. Wilding, the champion tennis player, has received cablei advice from Home that he has passed the foreign examination to the rolls aa a barrister and solicitor.
The death occurred last week, at Hornby, Canterbury, of Mr R. M. Morten, aged 86 years. He went to Victoria fifty years ago, made a brief stay in Tasmania, and in 186tt came to Canterbury, settling at Rakaia as a sheepfarmer. Subsequently, says the "Lyttelton Times," he acquired the magnificent block ot 6,000 acres of hill property, known as the Waipara and White Rock runs. One of his earliest investments in Canterbury was the site of the present United Service Hotel, the fine building which he erected on it being long known as "Morten's Block." This building is feaid to have cost £30,000.
