NEW ZEALAND LADIES' TOURNAMENT.
By Telegraph—Special to the Age. NAPIER. August 21.
At the New Zealand Ladies' Championship Hockey Tournament, at Hastings, this afternoon, the following were the results AUCKLAND (8) v. WAIRAKAPA B (nil;.
This was a gx>d game. Auckland attacked strongly from the start, but met a good defence. They continued to have che better of the forward play, however, and eventually won by 3 goals to nil. Miss Daines shot wo goals and Miss Kenny one goal. NELSON (3) v. WELLINGTON (1). This was a capital game. For a long time play was very even, but at last the combination of the Nelson forwards proved too much for Wellington, and the Nelsonians found che net on three occasions. HAWKE'S BAY A v. (3) WAIRARAPA A (nil).
This was the best and most exciting game of the day. Hawke's Bay rushed play at the start, and had a shot at goal which went over the line. Wairarapa retaliated by taking play down to Hawke's Bay's quarters, where they sent the ball into the net, but the referee disallowed the goal and gave Hawke's Bay a free hit for off-side. Soon afterwards when attacking in Wairarapa's circle Miss Wellwood (Hawke's Bay's captain) got a nasty knock on the no3e, which temporarily disabled her, and stopped play fcr about ten minutes. On resuming Hawke's Bay again pressed, and after a few minutes' play Miss wellwood registered the first score of the match for the local team. Continued good play by Hawke's Bay's central trio of forwards served to keep the game chiefly in Wairarapa's territory, where several attempts at goal went just outside the posts. Wairarapa's left wing (Miss E. Bicknell) repeatedly tojk the ball along the line, and got dangerously near the local goal line, but the Hawke's Bay defence was sound, and the ball was* i quickly sent back. Belore half time was called Miss 1 Wellwood shot another goal for Hawke's Bay. In the second spell play alternated between one end of the ground and the other, each team taking turns at attacking. Wairarapa was making strenuous efforts to score, but their efforts were always nullified by the good play of the Hawke's Bay backs. Towards the end of the spell Miss Wellwood shot her third goal. From the bully off Wairarapa carried play right | down to the opposing goal, and were . only stopped about two yards irom the line by a brililant run by Miss' . Grace Morrison, who cdt the bail out ! just as the Wairarapa centre was going to shoot. The whistle blew •jSOun after, with play in Wairarapa's I 25 j For the winners Miss Wellwood, who playod a brilliant game at centre, and Misses Crowley and Niven, were the pick of the forwards. while all the backs played well. For Wairarapa Miss E. Bicknell (left wirig) played the best wing forward game on the ground; and she was well supported by Mias K. O'Leary, (left inside), and Miss Z. Humphries (right wing.) The halves played a fair game, as did the right full back, but the left full back was weak. OTHER MATCHES. Taranaki beat Hawke's Bay B. by 3 goals to nil, while Horowhenua beat Wanganui by 2 goals to nil. The Huia Club has received a challenge to play a match against the Hinekoa Club (Blenheim), and a meeting will be held this evening at 7.1*5 o'clock, to consider the matter.
