The Prime Minister, Mr Asquith, speaking at Bletchley, in Buckinghamshire, said people had no conception of the splendid character of the reception that awaited the Budget in the country. No protests had been received from working men, or from the middle classes. Lord Monson declined to attend Laiberal demonstration at Barton-on-Humber, on the ground that the Budget was socialistic in principle and antagonistic to Liberalism. ( If it were applied, he added, it] would prove highly to the great financial and commercial interest of the country.

A DEMONSTRATION THAT FAILED
Received August 16 10.30 p.m. LONDON, August 16. Fifteen thousand persons attended the Budget protest League's demonstration at Manchester. Mr W. Joynson-Hieks (Conservative M.P). was constantly interrupted during his speech, cheer after cheer being given for Messrs Lloyd-George and Churchill. A protest resolution was defea ted largely.
