The "Sydney Morning Herald" in ita editorial comments on Sir John Forrest's Budget, deals warily with the dffiicult financial situation. "There, is no proposal for extra taxation," says the journal, "but • that may come later The Treasurer could have balanced his estimates by a tax on tea. By the issue of Treasury bills, a loan policy may ba »aid to have been inaugurated. The Budget is but preliminary to a ■ Jarger Bridget, which may be said to depend ou the Premiers' Conference." The "Daily Telegraph" says the Budget contains matterjfor some very hard thinking „by both the Federal and State legislatures. The form which the Budget willJifinally take will depend on how the proposed readjustments of the financial relations between the States and the Commonwealth are vievt-ed by the Premiere* Conference. LOSS ON PACIFIC CABLE. Reeeived"August 13, 8.55 a.m. MELBOUNRE, August 13. The Commonwealth's share of the estimated loss for the curreik year on the Pacific cable is £20,000. The House 6t Representatives, after a short discussion on the Budget, adjourned the debate to the 25tb, to enable Mr Deakin to attend the Premiers' Conference. The Senate similarly adjourned.
