FOOTBALL IN AUSTRALIA.
PONSONBY v. NEWTOWN. EASY WIN FOR VISITORS. Received August 11, 8.35 p.m. SYDNEY, August 11. Special interest was taken in '•.he match between Ponsonby and Newtown to-day, an it decided the club championship of Australia. The weather was dull, and rain iell. The attendance was about 8,000. Newtown were handicapped by the absence of two of their selected nun, who had met with slight accidents. During the second' half Booiiu the ex-New Zealander, was also disabled, he having some ribs broken. The visitors showed to better advantage throughout Early in the game McGregor, taking advantage of a mull, scored a smart try. The visitors pressed heavily, there being some fine scrum work. A superb rush ended in Hall getting over. O'Learv failed with the kick at goal in both instances. Murray added a third. Webb missed the goal. Newtown's only score was a penalty goal kicked by Russell. In the second spell Newtown added a penalty goal kicked by Russell. For Ponsonby McGregor scored a good try from a cross kick by Gillett. O'Leary converted. The game thus ended in a win for Ponsonby by 14 points to 6. Received August 11, 7.35 p.m. SYDNEY, August 11. The Maoris beat Queensland by 36 points to 25 points. At the close of the game several thousand persons rushed the ground, and made a hostile demonstration against the visitors.
