PAHIATUA NEWS.
(From Our Resident Reporter). BALLANCE NOTES. Tuesday, A large number of dairy farmers have fresh cows in, consequently the milk supply ac the butter factory is increasing, and the factory is now receiving milk every other clay, and all dairy stock being in splendid condition, a good season is anticipated. Mr Reay, oi Southland, has been appointed manager of the Tararua Cheese Factory. There are good prospects of a larger supply of milk being received this season. Atlhough wet weather somewhat spoiled the attendance at the social in aid of the Hall and Sunday School Prize Funds, yet the function was a financial success, there being a credit balance of over £4. During the evening songs were rendered by Mr J. Vosper (3), Mr Cooper (3), and three song 3 and club drill were given by the school children- Mr T. Wilson gave three recitations. An excellent supper was provided by the ladies. Good music for dancing was supplied by Mr A. Carter. Mr G. Vila making a capital M.C. The piano for the nccssun was kindly la.n »y M'-- Thompson. The settlers about here will be very pleased when the approaches to the bridge naar the factory are completed, as at present the roadway is very awkward to travel over at night time. Mr Martin, of Masterton, took possession of Mr Carey's farm last week, and Mr Carey has taken over Mr York's property. Mr York, who is going North, is a very old and respected settler, and his absence will be very much felt in this district. He will tame with him good wishes for his fuure prusperity from his many friends in Ballance.
The drag to convey the Wednesday football team to Woodville to-morrow (Wednesday) will leave the Commercial Hotel at 2 p.m. sharp. An authority from Wellington, who was in Pahiatua last week, stated that Paihatua was one of the cleanest and tidiest towns in the North Island.
To-monow afternoon, in Mr G. Daley's paddock, the Pahiatua Gun Club will hold the 'first "shoot" for the mounted stag's head presented for competition by Mr May, of Mangataiuoka. The club is in a very, flourishing condition, and the members are very enthusiastic over the "shoots."
Mr G. S. Milne, who for some time past has been Engineer to the Pahiatua Cuunty Council, has resigned his position. The Pahiatua Borough Council met ' ast evening, Mr D. Crewe, the Mayor, presiding, A grant of £lO per year was made to the Pahiatua Brasa Band, the band to give twelve open-air concerts and two performances on special occasions. Other
routine business was transacted. Mr Thomas Hurley, an old settler of the Bush, died at the residence of his sister, Mrs Quirke, of Konini, to-day. The deceased, who had been ailing for some time, was 70 years of age. He was one of the first settlers to take up land in this district Mr A. S. Evans, our cash draper, in another column advertises for an experienced lady assistant for his drapery establishment. Messrs L*algety and Co., Ltd., have received instrucioiis from Mr Jas. Macpherson to sell, on his behalf, 650 20-monlhs to 2J-year steers. The sale, Which is an unreserved one, is to he held in the P.F.A yards on Wednesday, 18th inst , at 2 p.m. The stock to be offered conissts of gcod colours and good Shorthorn cross. Mr J. P. Lomax, of Hamua, has just returned from Featherßton. where he has made a very successful canvas for the Wellington Farmers' Freezing Company. About £7,000 worth of 3haras have been taken up in the Lower Valley district, and I understand that Mr Lomax has undertaken to" canvas, the Eketahuna and A If red ton districts. STOCK MARKET. The New Zealand JLoan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, report on their P.F.A. sale to-day as follows :~There was a medium yarding of sheep and a large entry - of cattle. Prices for sheep were well maintained, while cattld somewhat lagged, but the class of stock was not up to revious sales. We
quote.—Sheep: Two and 4 and 6tooth ewes in lamb, 16s Id; aged ewes in lamb, 7s 4d to lis' sg. Cattle: Three-year bullocks, £4; 2year steers, £2 10s; dairy heifers, £4 10s; cows in calf, £2 3s, £2 ss, £3 7s 6fl, £4 10s; fat cows, £3 7s; cows with calf at foot, £2 2s; bulls, £2 ss. Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report on their P.F.A. sale, to-day, as follow:-—We had a good yarding of sheep and cattle. All classes uf sheep met r. ready salo as also did steers. Backward heifers were not sought after. We quote—Soundmouthed ewes in lamb, lis 6d to 12s lOd; f.m. ewes, 7s 5d to 9s 7d; empty ewes, 9s lid;, fat wethers, 16s; mixed 2-tooths, lis 6d; good hoggets, 10s 6d to lis 9d; others, 10s to 14s; forward bullocks, £5 12s; 3-year steers, £4 12s 6d; year steers, 32s 6d to £3 lss; sound dairy cows, £3 17s 6(1 to £6 ss; cows in calf. £1 17s 6d to £3 10s; springing heifers, £5.
j Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report:--We had held our opening sale in the P.F Association's yards ! to-day. Sheep did not come in quite to advertised ivimbors, but we had a full yarding of cattle. Dairy stock was not so keen in demand, owing to recent bad weather. The demand for sheep was not quite so brisk as in previous salts. We Quote —F.m. ewes in lamb, fair condition, 10s lOd to 12s; f.m. ewes in Jamb, (poor), 8s 2d to 9s Id; 2-tooth . wethers, to 14s 2d; small hoggets, . 6s 9d to 7s 4d. Cattle—3-year steers, to £4 7s 6d; forward, 4-year-old i steers, £5 15s; springing heifers, I £4 Is 6d to £5 2s; empty heifers. £2 j7s 6d to £2 12s 6d; weaners, 25s to 275; backward springing heifers, £3 <7s6d to £3 15s.
THE FARMERS' FREEZING COMPANY. A meeting of the Wellington Farmres' Freezing Company was held at Pahiatua to-day, Mr J. C. Cooper presiding. It waa decided to postpone the statutory meeting from September Ist to September 10th. The committee appointed to inspect sites reported on the same, and- were further instructed to inspect other sites. The reports of the canvassers are still very satisfactory. The iocal farmers nominated for directors are as follow—Messrs J. C. Cooper, P. Lomax, Thos. Hodgins. Mr Cooper wii! visit Wednesday and Horoeka on Saturday evening at 7.30, at the request of the settlers there. Mr Hodgins will probably accompany Mr Cooper to Horoeka.
