MASTERTON TENNIS CLUB.

ANNUAL MEETING

The annual meeting of members of the Masterton Tennis Club was held in the Technical School yesterday afternoon The chair was occupier l by Mr G. C. Summerell, and there was a fair attendance of members.

The chairman, in proposing the adoption of the report and balance sheet, which have already been published in these columns, said they disclosed a moat satisfactory state of affairs. Out of a total membership of 160, there were no less than 103 active members. This meant Jthat the courts were fully occupied during the season, which was a good sign. The finances of the Club had been carefully watched during the year, and the present position showed a marked improvement on the previous year. There had been fairly heavy expenditure in some directions during the year, but the outlay was more than compensated for by

the improved courts. The championship meeting held during the year had proved successful, both financially and otherwise The grounds had been exceptionally well kept during the year,, and their condition reflected great credit on the caretaker, Mr Treader. Mr D. Caselberg seconded the moton, und in doing so said the outstanding feature of the balancesheet was the way the Club had conducted its championship meeting. It was certainly a credit to all concerned.

Mr N. D. Bunting, in supporting the motion, said he would like to take the opportunity of congratulating the Secretary, Mr A. R. Sclanders, on the efficient manner in which he had managed the business of the Club during the past year. The fact tha f . not a single subscription was outstanding, and that the overdraft, which at the beginning of the year was £96 5s lOd, now stood at £6B 2s Id, spoke for itself. He concluded by complimenting the Secretary on the most excellent report' and balance sheet submitted.

Mr Sclanders, in returning thanks for the eulogistic references made, said he had received very valuable assistance from various members of the Club during the year, amongst whom he would like to specially mention were Miss Wolff, the Ladies' Secretary, and Messrs Bunting, Cox and aldington.

The report and balance-sheet were unanimously adopted.

Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follow:—President, Very Rev. Dean McKenna; Vica-Presi-dents, Messrs A. R. Bunny and C. C . Cox;. Hon. Secretary, Mr A R. Sclanders; Hon. Treasurer, Mr N. D, Bunting; Ladies' Secretary, Miss Hoimwood; Ladies' Committee, Mrs J. B. Henry, Misses M. H. Pay ton and R. Carr; General Cjmmittee, Messrs G. G. Aitken, H. M. Boddmgton, D. Caselberg. N. H. James, and J. V. Gordon; Auditor, Mr G. O- Summerell. Mr D. Caselberg brought up th,e matter of the unfortunate clashjng of dates of the Club's annual Tournament with that of the Dannevirke Club. Masterton certainly had prior claim to the fixture, having held their tournament on the same date for fourteen years, while Dannevirke had only held the date for two years, j The clashing of the fixtures was decidedly detrimental to the Masterton Tournament. He moved that a deputation, consisting of.three members of the Committee, wait on the Welllingtnn Provincial Lawn Tennis Association at an early date to protest against Dannevirke holding their meeting on the same date, viz., January 22nd. The Secretary stated that the matter had formerly been brought under the noticejof the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, and that body had replied to the effect that as the programmes of the Meetings referred

to were brought forward by two different Provincial Associations they could not see their way to insist on any alteration in the dates. The New Zealand Secretary also stated that in the opinion of his Council it was in the interests of the sport generally that as many of the bye-tour-naments as possible should be recognised by the governing body. The motion was sceonded by Mr Bunting and carried unanimously.
