WELLINGTON FARMERS' MEAT COMPANY, LTD.
To the Editor. Sir, —"New Chum" says that the Canterbury sheepfarmers know their business. Quite so! When they found out that the Chrfstchurch Meat Company had a monopoly and could not take all their fat stock they did all they possibly could to get another works started. Result —they now have the Pareora works, the finest and most up-to-date in New Zealand, making the fifth works in Canterbury, against two in this district. But don't imagine that the Christchurch Meat Compan:,- gave up their monopoly without a struggle. It was commonly reported than they lost between £50,000 to £75,000. These figures might seem high, but when you consider that that company bumped the price up 2s per head wi ;h the object of crushing out of the district the new company, it is quite reasonable, but ,tne farmers, "knowing thejr bdsioii'Ss." saw through their little garw'v and stuck to the new wtifks, ]Lhe Pareora works were started there was one man in the who di d ' exactly the same as one of our companies here is; doing here, had half a dozen men buying for him ail round the country. But they would not buy at the saleyards. Oh dear no! That would bump up the price nn the farms. The above mentioned buyer is the first and only gazetted ftltillionaire in New Zealand. He is :,afgs one of the largest shareholders in the Cbristchurch Meat Company. Since the Pareora works has weathered the storm there is no lack of opposition at the saleyards, as "New Chum''>/admits, pnd now our millionaire is resting on his oars, competition being too keen. I notice that the secretary to the new company is inviting nominations for the Board of Directors. brother farmers, try to . get' the best and most level headed nfen as our Directors, because thd* ?tjjjther ccmpany will do ,the Christ church hold the monopoly, and • s US out, and if they us right for not company, and our fjiplirtin will then be wcrse than ever it was. As showing you what farmers can do by pulling together 1 would referyou to the South Canterbury and also the North Canterbury Farmers' Co-operative Associations, which sfre' both doing by far the largest business in their respective districts,;j and annually return to their shareholders a very large percentage of bonuses, and also pay a fair percentage for capital invested.—l am, etc., ENTHUSIAST No. 2.
