A LECTURING TOUR.
LIEUT. SUACKLETON TO VISIT AMERICA. Received August 9, 8.50 a.m. LONDON, August 8. Lieutenant Shackleton, leader of Jhe recent Antarctic Expedition, will lecure in the United States and Canada. President Taft and Earl tirey (Governor-General of Canada) are members of the reception committee. Record fees have been guaranteed. In the course of an interview, Lieutenant Shackleton stated that the proceeds of his lectures were already mortgaged. He explained that a ] group of Englishmen who promised assistance to his late expedition withdrew at the last moment, owing to the American financial crisis. The explurer raised £20,000 upon personal guarantees. The Australian and New Zealand contributions were used to secure stores and scientific equipment. Lieutenant Shackleton hepas, by the proceeds of his book, lectures and personal subscriptions to repay the £20,000 by the due date,, July, 1910.
