The many friends of Mr J. Welch,, of Willow Park, Opaki, will regret, to learn that he is seriously ill. Mr Arthur Chapman, who was for a number of years in the service of the Bank of New Zealand, has beenn appointed Town Clerk of Thames, vice Mr Albert Bruce, resigned. Mr Win. Newman, who went to> the Thames in 1b67, when the gold, rush occurred, and resided in the district ever, since, is dead; aged 77.. The death is also announced of Mr Alex. Forgie, who was also identified '. with the Thames for many years News has been received in Wood--ville of the death in Wellington of | Mrs Arthur Sowry, for some years a resident of Woodville. For about nine years she has been an invalid, the last two being spent in the Victoria the Hospital at: Wellington. She leaves six children beside h*;r husband, and has many: old friends in Woodville. A private cablegram has been received in Auckland recording the death of Mr Henry Isaacs, who was; Mayor of Auckland from. cember-rß74;*'Th J e deceased was born, |in London in 1824. He was in business for very many years in Auckland, and during the Maori wars he and his brother secured a number of contracts for provisioning the troopp. the death *is announced of Mrs> Whitehead, wife of Mr Caleb Whitehead, of Palmerston North, after an illness extending over some months. The late Mrs Whitehead was very well-known in Palmerston, where for many years Mr Whitehead was in business as a baker. Later they removed to Shannon, where Mr Whitehead took up farming pursuits, returning to Palmerston North about four years ago. The late Mrs Whitehead was aged 59, and was a sister of* Mr, Charles Leamington, of Main street, and Mrs J. Hall. She leaves. a grown-up family of three sons— Mr Ernest Whitehead, of Feilding;.. i Mr Henry Whitehead, of Petone, and : - Mr W. Whitehead, of Palmerston* i North.
