THE POLICE COMMISSION.

By Telegraph—Press Association. WESTPORT, August 5. The Police Commission arrived here at 6 p.m. overland from Reef ton, and sat in the evening. Evidence was by Leonard Cockery, licensee of the Royal Hotel, but formerly a policeman, that he was in the. service from 1898 to 1908, leaving with a good character, but because he was not on ten years he got no refund from thej Provident Fund, whereas a constabledismissed from the service would be entitled to a refund of his contributions. Witness also stated that constables should be better paid and receive additional uniform, better house and travelling: allowance, and. on leaving the 6er - ice be given his f merit list for use, if need be, as a character in the event of his applying for a position elsewhere.

Constable Reidon, on behalf of the police of the district, brought several compaints before the Commission, principally against alleged unfair promotions. He himself had no complaint.

Sergeant Dj Wulso gave evidence, the burden of his complaint being that Chief detectives were given preference over uniformed sergeants tor sub-insp3ctorateg, witness considering that detectives should rank in a (liferent branch of the service. The Commssiion will leave for Nelson to-morrow morning.
