THE MONEY MARKET.
Dealing with the State of the money market the current number of the "Trade Review," says that the official returns of exports and imports to June 30th showed a substantial increase in the former and and a decrease in the latter, this resulting in an excess of over £2,400,000 following on similar movements in the March quarter. The totals for the six months ending on June 30th, apait from specie, compared as follows: —Exports, £12,292,444; imports, £6,783,882; excess of exports, £5,508,562. The corresponding returns a year ago showed an excess of only £1,760,522 "The increased excess of the present season," says the "Trade Review," "brings, of course, a substantial alleviation to the financial position. Comparing the bank returns for the same periods we find the movements in advances and deposits show as follow: —Advances, Decumber quarter £21,423,752, June quarter £19,042,381. difference £2,381,371 dect; deposits, December quarter £19,422,054, June quarter £20,93J,759,difference5,509,705 inc. The position is thus relaxed to the extent of £3,891,076, a very substantia relief, The last half of the year—luly to December—is th<3 slack export season, and already the shipments of wool, meat and dairy proluce have assumed greatly reduced | proportions. The exports ofgraia vill this year come to the rescue to a J substantial amount, and on the other >and it isjpractically certain that imwrtation will continue on a reduced icale. Prospects for pastoral and ag■icultural production during the comng season are exceptionajly fawurjble, and paying prices' in the !; narkets of consumption a return to a toir measure of prosperity is hope"ully looked forward to for New Zeaand in the year 1909-10."
