WOODLANDS HUNT CLUB.
ANNUAL MEETING. ££ (FronTOur Pahiatua Correspondent). The Woodlands Hunt Club held their annual Steeplechase at Pahiatua yesterday. Heavy rain fell in the early morning, but the weather brightened about. 10 o'clock, and a fair number of spectators found their way to the course, including several from Wairarapa and Palmerston North. Several showers fell during the afternoon, but notwithstanding this and tfi3 heavy state of the racecourse, some good racing was witnessed. The most popular win of the.day was that of Mr McTavish's Lord Ullin in the Kumeroa Steeplechase, the horse and rider (J. Egan) receiving an ovation on entering the enclosure. Tyrannic was successful in winning a double. Fourtcp.n bookmakers were licensed. The following are the results: — Maiden Fla't Kane, 5 furlongs. Mrs E. C. Giesun's Captain Bell, 10.0, 11. Jackson 1 Mr A. Laing's Farronite, 10.0, C. Price 2 Mr A. Dixon's Koniwai, 10.0, Lambess 3 A good field started. Captain Bell taking the lead was never headed; Farronite runnng a good second. Hunters' Handicap Hurdles, 1J mile. Mr K. Bain's Vivace, 11.0, C : Milne 1 Mr C. H. Arrow's Hepere, 11.0, Buchanan 2 Molly Fisher the other starter, fell at the hurdle in front of the .grandstand. Otus lead into the straight ant? seemed to have the race won, but Vivace beat him oil the post. An inquiry wa3 held into the running of Otus, and the rider and horse were disqualified for the meeting. WOODLANDS HUNT CLUB STEEPLECHASE, 2* rnles. Mr W. G. Shannon's Oakley, 12.0, Shannon 1 Mr S. P. Girdwood's Wild Oats, 11.0, Main 2 Mr J. McTavish's Lord Ullin. 11.10, Egan 3 Nine started in this race. Lord Ullin forging to the front until about half a mile from the winning post, when Wild Oats and Oakley came through, the latter winning by about a length. Members'>Flat Race, 1 mile. Mrs N.*Baildon's Tyrannic (late Tyrant), 10.7, A. Best 1 Miss Shannon's Arcadia, 10.7, G Hirat 2 Mrs R. G. Shaw's Jet de More, 11.7 3 Tyrannic and Arcadia went to the front, maintaining that position until entering the straight, whijn Tyrannic drew out, and won easily. Hack Handicap Flat, 6 furlongs. B. Nicholls' Madeira, 9.5, C. Cress 1 Mrs E- C. Giesen's Captain Bell, 10.2, Jackson 2 Mr x2. Yuile's Arapata, 9.7 3 Captain Bell got the best of a bad start and kept his position until well in tho straight, , when he was challenged by Matira, who managed to pass the judge's box first by about half a length. This was the best finish of the day. Kumeroa Steeplechase, about 2 miles. Mr J. McTavish's Lord Ullin, 11.10, J. Egan 1 .Mr N. L. Avery's Commodore, 11.0, D. Buick 2 Mr K. Bain's Vivace, .11.0, C. Milne * 3 Maringa took the lead for first mile and a half,when Lord Ullin and Commodore drew up. At the hurdle by the gate Maririgw fell, and Lord Ullin, who was then increased the distance between himself and Commodore, and won a good race by several lengths. Hunters' Flat Race, 1J miles. Mr N. Baildon's Tryannic (late Tyrant), 11.0, A. Best 1 Miss Shannon's Arcadia, 11.0, Shannon 2 Mr W. H. Buick's Fireatick, 11,7, D Buick 3 Tyrannic jumped to the lead, followed by Arcadia, and half a mile from home these two horses shot away from the field, Tyrannic winning by about three lengths. Neither the jockeyfc r/or the horses were hurt in the two spills that occurred, both riders re-mounting and finishing the race.
