GENERAL NAVAL STAFF. ENDORSED BY FEDERAL MINISTER. United Press Association—By Electric Telegrapn Copyright. Received August 4, 9.50 a.m. MELBOURNE, August 4. The Federal Minister for Defence, Hon. Joseph Cook, approves th suggestion made by the London "Times" for the formation of an Imperial General Naval Staff. He sees no difficulty in the way, but many advantages.

Such a staff, said Mr Cook, was inevitable. The Navy of the Empire must be one in the broadest sense. He hoped later ; on to fit in an Australian Navy as a section of it.

DEBATE IN FEDERAL HOUSE. MR DEAKIN BADLY HECKLED. Received August 4, 10 a.m. MELBOURNE, August 4. In the* House of Representatives, Mr W. H. Hughea, who was Attorney Genera! in the last Labour Ministry, movid the adjournment of the House, in order to discuss the Govern nent's action failing to disclose its the Commonwealth representatives at the Imperial Defines Conference.' Mr Deakin was badly heckled, but declined to be draWn. He raised a storm by accusing the Opposition of persistently wasting time.

THE CONFERENCE ON NAVAL ; MATTERS. Received August 4, 9,4 p m. LONDON, August 4. The discussion at the Defence Conference, last week, dealt cnly with military questions. The Admiralty's latest programme has leen in the delegates' hands during the week-end recess, and to-day the Conference commenced a discussion on naval matters at the Foreign Office, and sat for an* hour and a half. Messrs McKenna and Hal fane were' present. Only a very general t iscussion took i place on the naval memorandum, and the details were referred to a committee of experts, which will meet to-morrow. The Conference has adjourned till Thursday next.
