WAIRARAPA SOUTH COUNTY COUNCIL.
(From Our Cartercon Correspondent). The monthly meeting of the Wairarapa South County Council held at Carterton on Saturday, Or W. Perry presiding. The treasurer reported a debit balance of £241 lls,» and accounts amounting to £917 18s were passed for payment. The Valuation Department wrote that authority had been sent tu the Treasury for payment of £1,070 3s Id subsidy at 5s per £. on the rates collected.
The application of Mrs E. Stratford, Matarawa, lor the metalling of the road leading to her property was no entertained, as it was reported that the road was in fair order.
A request from Mrs E. Dixon, Park road, that the sludge left in front of her property be removed was referred tn thj engineer to attend to.
An application from Mrs Petersen for permission to take a few loads of metal from the Council's pit was referred to the Engineer. The Parkvale Dairy Company were granted permission to lay a four inch pipe drain across Nix's road the work to be done to the satisfaction of the County engineer.
It was resolved to reply to the Peatherstou County Council's application for a contribution towards the maintenance of the Rimutaka Road to the effect that the Wairarapa South County admits no liability in the matter.
The report of the conference of Local Bodies delegates on the question of Charitable Aid contribtions was read. It was resolved at the meeting that an endeavour be made, to form the Wairarapa into a separate Charitable Aid District, and a petition be sent *o the Minister to that effect. It was resolved to attach the seal of the Council to the petition. Dr. Smyth reported that a case of diphtheria had occured in the County, and proper precautions had been taken.
Messrs Workman and 1 Sons applied to have their thirds expended on Beet Creek road. The Engineer was deputed to arrarge, if possible with Mr Workman to metal the road, and submit an estimate of the crost at next meeting. Mr McGuinness, lessee of the old tollhouse at the Black Bridge waited upon the Council in reference to needed repairs to the building. The estimated cost of the repairs was £25, and it was resolved that h 3 be given a tree rental for a period of 5 years, on condition that he effects the necessary repairs, and carries out bis duties in regard to watching tha safety of the bridge. j}
•Mr Ha-nd-Ni-wton waited upon the Council with reference to the controversy with Mr Cameron, who has purchased a property at Flat Point. When the property was purchased an indicated road was included. This he now wanted the Council to buy from him, or take it and fence it when called upon. A committee consisting of the members of the riding and the chairman was appointed to confer with, Mr Crameron, with power to act.
The Council went into committee to deal ith an application from Mr H. R. Burgess for the amount of cost of repairing his waggon alleged to have been damaged by an accident through a faulty culvert on keke rood.
It as resolved to give notice of the Council's intention to take proceedings against carters and waggoners who carry excessive loads over the County roads.
A committee as s-et up to examine the Maungaterere bridge, and report upon its condition at the next meeting.
It was resolved to proceed with the necessary work on the Waiohine bridge. It was decided to strengthen the old groyne above the Mutarawa bridge at a cost of £a. The Engineer was authorised to attend to two broken culverts within the County, and to inspect the Maungatarere bridge and screw it up if necessary.
A bad piece of road on the Dalefield road was left to the Engineer and Cr Welch to attend to.
The Engineer was instructed to attend to the request of Mr D. Buchanain that the culverts un the East Coast road be put in immediately, as he was about to commence metalling.
Mr W. A. Herrick was granted pern ission to lower the pipes on the Main road south to enable him to draw water from his property.
