WELLINGTON LAND BOARD.

A considerable amount of business was transacted at the monthly meetirg of the Wellington District Land Board on Thursday. The Crown Lands Commissioner, Mr James Mackenzie, presided the other members present being Mesrss C. J. Canton, J. Dawson, A. Reese, auhd H. T. EJlingham. Formal notification was recieved that Mr J. Dawson had been reappointed a member of the board for another term of two years. The Commissioner notified the board tiiat applications had been recieved for sections 3 and 4, block 7, Tiffin, Carrington Settlement, from Mr J. Parker and Mr H. T. Cole, On a ballot the latter was successful and was allotted the sections.

The following applications for title were approved the usual conditions:—Section 46, block 12, Mt. Cerberus, 400 acres, H. T. EUingham; section 42, block 6, Tararua, 200 acres, A. H. Braithwaite; section 10, block 3, Puketoi, 200 acres, H. G. Leich; sections 4 and 5, block 15, Maung«karetu. 200 acres, R. and W. Cleaver; section 11 and 12, block 5, Tiriraukawa, 200 acres, Mrs J. Allen. Transfer of the following sub-lsase was approved, subject to the ranger's report being satisfactory : Section 40, block 7, Tararua, 200 acres, W. L. Geange to A. Woodley, provided transferee is eligible and suitable.

The Crown Lands Ranger recommended that section 22, block 13, Mangahao, 200 acres, be classified as bush land for the purposes of residence as' the area previous'y acquired was overgrown at the urns of selection. It was resolved to approve of the recommendation. Mr E. Grant, lessee of section 2, block 4, Hunua, 531, acres, wrote stating he was camped on some Maori land some distance from the section so as to be near the timber, but spent all his spare time on the section, and intended building as soon as he could get in timber. It was resolved that six months'' grace was all that, could be given. With reference to the application to transfer section 61, block 7, Tararua, Nireaha Village Settlement, 54 acres, from Mr W. Mc- ' Donald to Mr M. Rundel, it was resolved to give throe :»'inth« for compliance with the conditions, failing which the section will be declared forfeited. Mr S. Coffin, lessee of section 158, Makuri Village Settlement, 17 acres, applied to transfer the same to Mrs J. Powell. It was resolved to advise him that married women are barred by the regulations from selecting land in this village settlement. Mrs A. Bennett was granted permission to transfer section 903, block 14, Rewa, 617 acres, to Mrs W. R. Bennett.

Mr John Hughes, mortgagee to Mr R. Chase Morris, applied to transfer section 11, block 13, Mangahao. 200 acres, to Mr T. Fauhy, lessee of sections 9 and 10 adjoining. It was resolved to grant the apilcation, not withstanding ojections put in. A report was received '■ from the ranger on Mr F. H. Dowden's application to have sections 43 and 46, Nireaha Village, added to his present adjoining holding on a permanent tenure they being leased by him at present from year to year. It was resolved to approve of Mr Dowdens' being allowed to nelect them on renewable lease at a rental based on the price of £lO per acre and subject to the usua l conditions. It was resolved to invite tenders for a lease of section 10, Pongaroa Suburbs, 5$ a eras, for a tvrm of seven years under section 124 of the Land Act, 1908, on the usual conditions at an upset rent of 20s per annum. A report was reciiv-d from the Crown Lands Ranger as to re-otfering forfeited section 4, block 5, Maungakaretu, 186J acres, to Mr H. R. Pike, lessee of adjoining section 3, j at the original rcnial of £22 bs per annum. it was resolved as there were other applications, to throw the section open on renewablj lease at that renb.l, . Mr J. 11. Jennings, lessee of section 62, Nireaha Village Settlement, 34J acres, sent a letter explaining why he had not effected the required improvements, and it was resolved to grant him six months' time in which ti do so as a final concession. Mr A. Kesi ?e, lessee of rection 6, block 8, Iluangarua, Longbush Settlement, 792£ acres, wroto with ! reference to his non-residence on the section. It was resolved to advise bim that residence was essential, and that if he took one of his sons in as a partner there was a provision in' . the lease that the residence of one ' partner is sufficient compliance with the residental conitions It was reported that Miss H. M. Priest, lessee of section 22, block 5, Mount Cerberus, 200 acres, was not residing on her section, but lives with her brother on the adjoining section 21. It was resolved to accept this in the meantime. The ranger reported that Mr T. J. Whitta, lessee of section 4, block 12, Mount Cerberus, 365£ acres, was no residing on his holding, but lives with a brother about a mile awav. The Commissioner reported that the selector was granted permission by the Board, in December 1907, to live with his brother for one year. This was accepted for the present. j Mrs M. J. O'Connor, ler-s?e of '. section 15, block 2, Manngakaretu, i i 99£ acres, wrote with reference to her non-residence and stated that she was not strong enough to live out there during the bad weather, but that her hußband and son are building on it. The board decided to agree to this provided she took her son into partnership. With reference to Mr J. D. Anderson's, application to have his interest in sections 20 and 3, blocks 9 and 10, Kuahine, forfeited, the Commissioner reported that at present Mr Anderson had not committed any default, but that if necessary he could be allowed to surrenuder. It was resolved to accept the surrender from Mr Anderson of all his right, title and interest in ihe section free of any claim on the Land Board or Government of whatsoever by way of compensation for improvements or refund of moneys paid or otherwise. The lessee of sections 31, 32. 184, 135, 142, 143, 144, and .145 inclusive, blocks C and 10, Makuri Town ship. Gk acres, Mr J. H. Powell applied to have his interest

forfeited as he finds it would cost lorn £4O to £6O to fence in the land and as two of his sections are practically washed away by £the river. It was resolved.
