The Loyal Lodge of Oddfellows, M.U., Greytown. have just held their half-yearly meeting, and show £1,971 tu credit of funeral fund, £350 to management, £lB to distress fund, and a surplus £560. The Greytown Lodpe is one of the most lodges in the Wellington district.
Six men who deserted from H.M.S. Challenger at Rarotonga. were placed or- the Hauroto for conveyance to Auckland, but after the Hauroto had left the wharf two of them lumped overboard and swam ashore. The other four, on the arrival of the Hauroto, at Auckland, on Saturday mornine. were brought before the Court and remanded in custody to await an opportunity of being placed aboard the Challenger. The Junior Morris Tube Club held a practice on Friday evening hist, the following being the best scores:— Sclanders, 32 and 30; Waddington, 32 and 30; La Roche, 30; E. J. Fuller. 30; Drummond, 32; Newton*, 31; Summerell. 30. The Club will, in future, be knnsyn as the United Morris Tube Rifl" Club. Mr Reihana Boyea' Orchestra has been engaged to supply the music, and judging by the demand for tickets the function should eclipse previous socials held under the auspices of he Brigade. On Friday night last Mr and Mrs J. li. Percy, of Tividal. Upper Taueru, entertained a large number of friends at a "house-warming." A most enjoyable evening was spent, the guests being lavish in their praise of the hospitality extended to them by Mr and Mrs Percy. Dancing was induced in during the evening, about 50 couples participating. Mr D. McGovern was M.C.. and excellent music was supplied by Miss Iggulderi. Songs were rendered by Misa Williams, Messrs W. Iggulden, and B. Parker, and a recitation was given by Mr G Laing. An excellent supper was provided, and when tho guests departed hearty cheers were given for the host and h ;stess.
The Masterton. Highland Pipe Band intend holding a social and dance some time during the present month* An old native named Renata te Pewa was killed by a train on Friday night, near Waipawa, while he was walking on the line towards a pa. The western approach to the Ruamahanga Bridge at Te Ore Ore has been considerably widened, and lurther protective works constructed to strengthen the bank near that end of the bridge. The Rev. J- J. North, of Wellington, has accepted an invitation from the Rev. C. E. Porter to deliver a lecture in the Methodist Church on Tuesday, August 10th. Mr North's lecture will be on "Jerusalem," and will be illustrated by lantern views.
John Marks, engine-driver at Graham and Sons' tannery, Bunnyoiig, Victoria, narrowly escaped with his life recently through being caught in the bark mill, which he was feeding. , Marks's fingers became caught in a loop of bark, and were dragged into the rollers. Fortunately he was able to throw the rollers out of gear, but not before his left avn was crushed past the elbow. The large knives were still revolving, and lie was in imminent danger of being cut to pieces at any moment. He remained in this jiredicament for over a quarter of an hour, screaming for help, but the noise of the machinery drowned his voice. Marks was eventually discovered by two turners, but they did not know how to stop the machinery. They gave the alarm, and the foreman threw the belt'off with a rod.
Marka maintained his presence of mind, and, being a practical engineer, directed the operations for his release. The mangled limb was amputated.
A reward is offered for the recovery of a slate-coloured t beardie dog lost in Masterton. A furnished bed-sitting room is required by an adveriser. The Woodlands Hunt .'Club's Steeplechase Meeting takes place on Wednesday next, on the Pahiatua racecourse. \
