PAHIATUA NEWS.

\ (From Our Resident Reporter). Thursday. A special meeting of the Fire Brigade to make final arrangements for the drawing; of the art union, which takes place to-morrow (Friday) evening, was held in the Brigade room, last evening, Captain McAliater pre siding. It was decided to hold a skating carnival in the Drill Hall from 7.30 o'clock. A charge of Is will be made at the door, which will also entitle those going to the carnival to a ticket in the art union. It was decided to ask the Mayor and Councillors to he present, and the captain of the Brigade is to supervise the distribution of the paintings (15 in number). The prizes will be given out immediately after the drawing takes place, and a resolution was passed that all prizes not claimed within three months will become the property of the .Brigade. The paintings, which are elaborately framed, are painted by Miss Cameron, whose landscape and scenic pictures are not unknown in this district. The annual meeting of St. Paul's Church will be held on Wednesday next, when the work done during the past year will be rusieml, and the balance-sheet submitt<r\ /Mus'cal and vocal iteni3 will be rendered during the evening. Mangatainoka Seniors play Nireaha at the latter place on Saturday next, and the Juniors play tha same Club's Juniors at Mangatainoka. The following will represent the Mangatainoka Juniors:—Hapi, Smeaton, Kenny, McQuilkin (2), Barrell (2), Mexted, Polglase, Davidson, Howett, Dtingan, Hughes, Harvey and Futcher. Play wiP commence at 8 p.m. sharp, and players are requested to be on the ground punctual. Considerable interest is being evinced in the proposed rifle club at Managtainoka, and a meeting will be h:ld on Saturday evening, when the subject will be fully discussed.

Improvements are being effected to the Mangattiinoka Cheese Factory The Catholic Social, held in the Drill Hall, last evening, was a decided success, and it ig estimated that there were close on 400 people present. Splendid dance music was supplied by Messrs Bluett's String Band, and Messrs G. Smith and D. Kelly acted as M.C.'s. During the evening songs were sung by Miss Hannon (Wellington), Misses TuJloch and Spillana and Messrs Ecdeton and Hill (Pahiatua), and Messrs Cosgrove and Davy (Woodvilk), Mrs E. Sullivan made a very energetic secretary, and 3he had a host of willing workers to help her in the many duti23 attached to such a large function, and which may well be termed the best of its kind ever held in this town. The Poverty Bay Rugby, representative team will reach Pahiatua on August 19th inst., and the match against the Bush Union will be played on the Recreation Ground. Pahiatua play Hamua on Saturday next. COMMERCIAL. MOST SUCCESSFUL SALE OF PUREBRED AND GRADE JERSEY STOCK. Messrs Abraham and Williams, J Limited, held a highly successful clearing sale at Woodville on the 28th inat. of purebred and grade Jersey stock, horses, farm implements, etc., on behalf of Mr Stephen Hutchings, The purebreds were keenly competed for, selling up to 39 guineas, the •bulk of them going to the Manawatu. The grade cows also sold exceptionally well, realising prices as high as £14"155. Horses, implements, elc, also realised good values, and we have to report the best, sale of its kind held by us in this district for a number of years. Prices were:— Purebred Jersey heifer, in calf to purebred Jesey bull, 39 guineas; grade Jersey hejfers, in calf to purebred Jersey bull, £9 sjto £l2 12s; purebred Jersey cows, in calf to purebred Jersey bull, 20, 22, and 27 guineas; purebred Jersey cow, Princess IX., in C3lf 17J guineas; purebred yearling Jersey bulk, 20 guineas; purebred weaner Jersey heifer, 26.? guineas; purebred weaner Jersey bulls, 5£ and 8 guineas; grade weaner heifers, £2 12s to £5 7s 6d. The herd of 24 cows, excluding the purebreds, made the excellent average of £lO lis. Farm horses sold from £6 to £l4 7s 6d, sows £1 17s to £2 17a 6d, store pigs 22s 6d tO 25:'.
