(By "Zetland.") Pukewai went slightly sore consequent on racing at Trentham, so may not be taken south to fulfil his engagement in the Winter Cup. Te Arai, Le Beau, and Capitol are the leading selections at present for the Grand National Steeplechase. Considerable interest is being taken in the Woodlands Hunt Club meeting, to be held at Pahiatua next week, Several Waiarrapa trained horses'.will take part at the fixture. On Sunday next, Ist August, racehorses, thoroughbreds generally, will be counted a year older, and present yearlings will rank as two-year-olds ar.d so on. Mr W. E. Bidwitt's Provocation and Tribulation are to leave for Sydney during the last week in August. Turnut and Osiris are entered for events to be run at the Rosehill meeting, New South Wales, to-morrow, but'it is probable that neither will start until later on. The sale of the Birkenhead colt, Dawn, to Mr W. Ralph, of Auckland, is reported. A large number of horses engaged at the Grand National meeting have already arrived at Riccarton. The training tracks must be in fine order, as several of the Hal racers are skipping over six furlongs in about Imin 19secs. The annual meeting of the Wairorapa Hunt Club, to be held at Clareville on August 26th, is being looked forward to by owners, trainers, and a goodly proportion of the racing public. When the nomination list is published it will be found that the fixture is growing in larity, and this shruld be further proved on the day of the gathering. Merrie Rose, who has been spelled

during the winter, has again been put into work. The Merrie England mare has built up splendidly durir.g her rest from work, and is in fine condition to undergo a good preparation for spring racing. Moloch, who has had an easy time of it during the winter, is bowling along in fine style on the tracks. He is putting plenty of vim into his work, and this should betoken his' prominent running when he again strikes racing condition. Considering the quantity of rain that has fallen during the month, the grass track at Opaki is in exceptionally good order. Yesterday morning there were a large number of horses out, and some good work executed. Kiltie Lass, looking fresh and bright after her spell, had a little the best of the San Fran— Zisca filly in a four furlongs spin. Over a mile Kuranui, with a big concession in weight, finished in front of Retinue, and Matira saw half a mile out slightly better than the Lakeshell gelding. The Merriwee —Bluewater mare and Merrie England filly were sent half a mile, the first named finishing in front. Others worked at from half to three-quarter pace were:—Sandix, Blue Ribbon, First Consul, Moloch, Embrocation, Sir Laddo colt. Merrie Rose. Gaelic, Sealer, Epsom Downs, Afterthought. Others out, but not worked were Aberration. Golden Butterfly, San Julie, Pnkewhai,. Lucretius, and Lethe gelding.
