A DEFAMATION BILL, Received July 29, 5.20 p.m. SYDNEY, July 29. The New South Wales Government is introducing a Defamation Bill to ! give,' further protection to newspapers. Provision is made for relieving newspapers from accumulation of punishment, where libel has been in circulation through a number of newspapers. The court have power to consolidate a series of actions so that the whole may be tried by one jury, which should assess the total damages. Relief is also given where defendant could prove that damages have been given against another defendant for a similar libel. PRESS CABLE SERVICE. Received July 29, 5.20 p.m. MELBOURNE, July 29. Senator Pearce has given notice to move on August 19th that a select committee inquire into the question of supply, conditions of sale, and the distribution which controls the Press cable service within the Commonwealth.
