Received July 29, 9 50 a.m. | LONDON.JuIy 28 The weather was breezy when play started at 11.50 a.m. Noble opened with a fourer and three off Barnes' first over. The pitch was greasy, with a difficult foothold. The batsmen gave a bright display of vigorous batting Barnes having 14 knocked off two overs Blythe took Rhodes' end and the latter relieved Barnes. The century was up in one hundred and five minutes. Macartney gave an awkward chance when 33 to Rhodes off Blythe. Then the latter, with a slow yorker, dismissed Noble, who had batted 26 minute?. Three for 10G.
Macarcney, who played resolute, polished cricket, lost his wicket playing back to Rhodes. He was missed when 50 at mid-on by Sharp, off Blvthe. His score included seven fourers, and his innings lasted one hundred minutes, Four 1 for 26.
Armstrong's innings was characterised by clever playing. He was at ihe wickets 45 minutes. Five for 148.
Trumper and RansforJ were now associated. The Sydnsyite gave a hard return to Blythe when he was 6, but the bowler failed to hold it. Various changes of bowling were tried. Trumper played free and excellent cricket. Ransford was vigorous, but gave a hard chance at 21 at rnid-on to Blythe off Hi'-at. At lunch the wicket was drying well. On resuming, Blythe and Hirst took up the bowling. Two hundred appeared on the board for a similar number of minutes' play The bating was confiJenc and fre°, but the bowling was indifferent and the fielding uneven. Trumper gave a chance low down to Hirst at mid-on, off Blythe Ransford, with 26, gave a chance at the wicket, oft Hirst. Trumper was taken in the deep field by Tyldesley. His score included a sixer and two fourers. He batted 95 minutes. Six for 237. Ranaford continued to play admirably. Hopkins drove Rhodes out of the ground for 6- Barnes caught him at point a mirute or two later. Seven for 256. When Cotter was out and the eighth wicket was down for 22, some surprise was expressed at the delay in declaring his innings closed. Noble, however, waited till Carter i was dismissed. Ransford batted in a masterly way for 110 minutes. He made a sixer and three fourers. With two hours and a-half left Spooner and Warner opened the second innings The former was stylish, but was missed by Arm strong, off Laver, when he Was 25. Warner, by careful play, brought the half-century on the board in 65 minutes Frequent changes were made in the bowling, but both batsmen were excellent, Spooner doing some fine off driving. Tylaesley had a life at Trumper's hands in the same over in which he placed Hopkins on to the wicket. Spooner displayed masterly driving, his score included seven fourers.
