<p SHIPMENT OF WHEAT. Between the Government's returns anl those compiled by private firms from official sources there is a discrepancy of more than 260,000 bushels. In view of the fact, remarks the"Christchurch Press," that this quantity represented about one eight lof the exportable surplus of the country, its whereabouts is a matter jof some consequence. It is either in I New Zealand or out of it. It is difficult to believe, in the face of facts and figures, that it is still on hand, and the simple assertion by the Agricultural Department that the official figures are correct requires some corroborative proof before i\ can be accepted as satisfactory. PROPOSED LAIJOR PARTY. The Labor party propose to establis 1 a newspaper in Christchurch, be cause it is alleged "the trade unionists and progressive peopl generally are ot the opinion tha they are not getti-ig fair treatmei: at the hands of the public Press a the present juncture; therefore, w I ask you to assist in the establish ment of a true. Labor paper." W «So not think, says the "Mataur Ensign/' that the Labor part could point to an instance wrier its members have received unfai treatment in the columns oZ th metropolitan journals. Each of thej : has department* devoted to babo and editfid by prominent members t the party. But it has, of course, right to establish a newspaper whether it will v; a success or no remains to be seen, In times past Nt" Zealand has had newspapers sol 1 devoted to cause, and that th cause of Labor; but they have a disappeared. Theories will not ru •newspapers. Hard cssh, energy, vr terprise and fairness, but above a] public support are required to mak a .newspaper a success.
