PERSONAL.
Mr W. R. Harkness, jf Waitohi, Tua Marina, Marlborough, ,was on Friday appointed to the position of manager of the Taratahi Cheese Factory. There were 28 applicants for the position. Another pioneer settler, Mr James Vile, a highly-respected resident of Feilding, died on Thursday last. He had reached the ripe age of over eighty years. The late Mr Job Vile, formerly member for Manawatu, was a brother of the deceased. The Union Company has presented Mr James M'Menaman, owner of the Terawhiti Station, with a free trip to Sydnev for himself and family, as a mark of recognition of his kindness to the survivors of the Penguin wreck. At a later date the survivors (passengers and crew) will present him with an illuminated address of thanks. Mr George Garry, a well-known musician, died at Christchurch on Friday last, in his fiftieth vear. He was for some years in Napier, and then went to New Plymouth, where for a considerable period he was conductor of the Philharmonic Society, later becoming bandmaster of! the New Plymouth Military Band, and still later organist of St. Mary's Church. He also acted as conductor of the New Plymouth Operatic Society. Mr was the composer of many melodious[songs and marches. He leaves a widow, two sons (Messrs Jack and Bert Garry, (who are both leading players in theatrical orchestras), and a daughter. The late Mr Garry was well-known in Masterton, having visited tnis town on many occasions with orchestras. His sons are also known in Masterton.
