HIGH PEAKjBY-ELECTION. A RETURN OF A LIBERAL. LONDON, July 23. The bye-election for the High Peak division of Derbyshire, necessitated by the appointment of Mr Oswald Partington, the sitting member, as a Junior Lord of the Treasury, resulted as follows: Mr 0. Partington 5 > 609 Mr Profumo, Conservative 5.272 Majority 33>i CLoiiTvOTING. 1 Received July 25, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, July 24. In the House of Commons, Mr J. Dillon (Nationalist M.P.I moved an amendment to the Irish Bill authorising the Treasury to raise money for the purchase of land by the Issue o£ consols. The Government refused to accept the amendment *m the ground that it 'would reduce the credit of the country and the price ot consols. The amendment was defeated by 132 votes to 128, amid Irish and Opposition cries of "Resign."
