PAHIATUA NEWS.

(From Oar Resident Reporter)

Thursday. The School social in trie Drill Ilall, last evening, was a fitting finale to what" will long be remembered in Pahiatua as a red-letter dav as regards educational matters. After the Chairman (the Rev. Speers) and the Hon. G. Fowlda had each delivered short addresses, dancing was commenced. Mr T. P. Wills acted as M:C. Songs were nicely rendered by Mrs Burgess, Miss Burgess and Misses Manifold and E. Graham, the latter having to respond to a vigorous encore. Misses 'Allen and M. Malcolm each played splendid violin solos, and Mr H. Webb gave a recitation. The accompaniments wore played by Miss Burgess and good 1 dance music was supplied by Mr Hicks, extras during the supper adjournment being kindly played by Mrs T. Husband, Miss Burgess, Miss Tulloch and Mr G. Mills. The Rev. Speers returned thanks to aIJ those who had rendered assistance at the opening ceremony, and the social, especially the ladies, who h;id gone to considerable trouble in connection with the refreshments. Mr D. Crewe kirnU p!aoeri lis motur-car at the disposal of the Hon. Mr Fowlds during his visit to Pahiatua, and this morning the Hon. gentleman and Miss Fowlds were driven to the Pahiatua Hospital to inspect that institution. The Hon. Mr Fowlds, who is Minister in Charge of Hospitals, expressed his satisfaction with the Hospital. The gentlemen who were present a-t yesterday's function returned to Wellington by to-day's express, and I understand that the Hon. Mr Fowlds is to perform a similar ceremony at Hawera next week, in connection with the opening bf the High School at that place. A sweepstake competition in connection with the Golf Club, player on the local links yesterday, was won by Mr McSherry. The second and third rounds for the President's trophy wnl be started on Saturday next. There is talk of an A. and P. Association being formed in Dannevirke. The well-known firm of Thos. Horton,(jLtd., made a donation ot trees for planting in the School grounds, yesterday, which were thankfully received by tfte School Committee. The firm this year have sent a large number of orders to the Wairarapa district, all of which have given satisfaction, and as the planting season is drawing to a close, all those des rous of obtaining reliable trees would do well to forward their orders to this firm. The Pahiatua Football Club play Nireaha at the latter place on Saturday next, and Konini will try conclusions with Hamua. Mr J. K. Carpenter, our local "bootmaker," reports that his clearing sale has, up to the present, exceeded his expectations, and he invites all those requiring to inspect his large and varied sup-' ply . . MANGAIAINQKA NOTES. The opening of the School Cadets' rifle range on Mr Baird's property took place yesterday, there being a large gathering of parents and others interested. Mr A. Barrell fired the first shot, and declared the range open. The cadets then fired a match, the highest score being put up by Milton Hughes. Afternoon tea was kindly provided by the wives of the committee men. 1 understand that Mr F. Wells, one of our best known sporting enthusiasts has been appointed manager of a butchery business in the Bay of Plenty. Mr Wells' absence from here will be keenly felt by the footballers, lie having always taken a live interesc in the local teams. Mr Wells ha 3 been in the employ of Messrs Barrell and Early for a considerable period. There was a fair attendance at the Mangatainoka Athletic Society's social last evening. During the evening vocal items were rendered by Miss May and Mr J. Brind, the latter also playing several extras for the dancing. Th'e dance music was supplied by Messrs E. Sharp (violin) and T. Dray (piano), and Mr J. McTavish junr. acted as M.C. The weather during the past two days has been exceedingly mild, and should be very beneficial to the young lamba that are appearing about here just now.
